The 2017 NFL Draft-Keeping up with The Joneses

Well Cowboys fans, it’s about that time! The 2017 NFL Draft is only days away and countless writers, prognosticators and so-called experts are burning the midnight oil trying to formulate their best guesses as to what players each team will take. Of course, I only care about the Dallas Cowboys, and concerning the Cowboys, I’d be willing to bet that most of those people were wrong about whom they thought Dallas would pick in the last 5 or 6 Drafts. Every team has specific needs entering the Draft, so those needs are normally what are addressed when the “Experts” predict whom will take whom in the Draft. There’s just one gleaming problem with that line of thought: Nobody truly knows.

TW and TF

There’s no way to predict a Draft outside of the Front Office.  For example: In 2013, Dallas traded down in the 1st round with the 49ers for a 3rd round pick and their 31st overall pick. We took Terrance Williams with that 3rd rounder and drafted Travis Frederick 31st overall. Frederick was considered a “reach” for Dallas because he was considered a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Does that seem like a reach to anyone now? No. Not only has the Dallas Cowboys fan base been trying, but the whole league has been trying to keep up with the Joneses in the last 5 or 6 drafts.

It’s no secret that Stephen Jones has had a good deal of influence on Jerry in terms of Draft choices in these last years of the Draft, and we can thank Stephen for talking Dad out of taking a shot on Johnny Manziel, ( seriously, we should ALL write him a Thank You card for that one ) but up until 5 or 6 years ago, I’m sure most people think JJ was sitting in the War Room by himself, clutching a scroll with names penned in blood where only HE can make the decisions in the Draft, and does so with NO help from ANY staff members. I think we know that’s not the case. He seems to be loosening his grip on the Draft even more lately, and that is a very good thing.

I can sit here and ACT like I know whom Dallas will take, but chances are, I’ll probably be wrong, or at least, off by a heck of a lot. And let’s not forget that this is the 1st year that teams will be able to trade compensatory picks, which may boost trade activity and further destroy the Draft Plan of many teams. After speaking with one of my best friends and Cowboys fan for life, Eric Bisson, he agreed that it was futile to even pretend we can see into the future, or even harder, into the mind of The Joneses.  Why bother when SO MANY other people will be wrong too?  So, a decision was made to go another route.
So I will ask YOU, my fellow Dallas Cowboys friends and family: Who do you think we should take in the upcoming 2017 Draft? Should we go “all-in” on Defense for the whole Draft? Should we mix in a TE, WR, OL or other position for depth? Leave your comments below, and let’s open the lines of communication within our Cowboys fan base and the Legacy Group. Chances are you have as good of a shot as I do at being right, and maybe you’ll be able to reference this post after the Draft and say “I called it!” But something tells me, we’ll all still be left keeping up with the Joneses.

Dallas Cowboys 2017 Draft positions.  What would YOU do with these picks??

A special thanks to Eric Bisson for his contribution to this blog, and to the rest of the “4 Horsemen” for being there with me, watching Cowboys games together since Day 1!
