The cost of team loyalty with fantasy football

LESS THAN A FAN?

When I was asked to fill in for someone missing from their “Fantasy Football” league back in 2009, I had no idea we would end up together here today. I know some diehard Dallas Cowboys fans who think that because I play fantasy football, I’m less than. This is the cost you pay for team loyalty when you play fantasy football.

In my first year, I completed my draft over a conference call. I was an active-duty Navy member at the time, and our league consisted of nine other Navy Recruiters. I had to Google “Fantasy Football” on my home computer to get an idea of what I was doing with my team whilst on the phone, which I had just paid $100 to compete in.

Does playing fantasy football make you less than a diehard Cowboys fan? That depends on who you ask. Initially, my lane was blogging about fantasy football. Then I discovered the 365-day year lifestyle as a Cowboys fan. I had to pivot to Official America’s Team because I’m a fan of Cowboys fans first.

If you played any team sports in high school, you understand what it means to compete. That competitive nature can easily grab you in the form of fantasy football—an industry packed with “Experts” sharing their strategies to dominate each NFL season. Why would a Dallas Cowboys fan want to play fantasy football at the expense of being called a fake fan?

IT’S A TRAP!

No, playing fantasy football does not make you any less of a fan than another fan who doesn’t. Everyone is doing it—fantasy football. Every time you turn on the TV on Sunday, some network desk is giving you BETTING advice. Now, that’s a TRAP. By that same logic, you’re less than a fan if you bet on another team to win. Make that make sense.
