2 former Dallas Cowboys players visit Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County
Why the Boys & Girls Clubs Kern County?
On Friday May 22nd two former Dallas Cowboys visited the Boys & Girls Clubs Kern County. Watching these kids smile and interact with former NFL players first hand was priceless. Flozell “The Hotel” Adams and Evan Oglesby spoke on behalf of One Star One Family. A Cowboys fan owned and operated 501(c)(3) non-profit. Here’s the Bakersfield s coop.
I met One Star’s founders DJ Kai and his wife Sherri in 2018 in Miami on South Beach at a Fans-Zone event. Fast forward eight years later and they’re making noise on the West Coast for all the right reasons. What began as a UNITY BBQ five years ago has now become a UNITY EVENT. On May 23rd they hosted their 5th annual Cowboys fan unity event.

Normally held in April but this year was special in May. Thanks to the NFL schedule dropping previously, Cowboys fans now had much to chat about at Stramler Park for this upcoming season. Both Flozell & Evan answered some of the brightest questions on the spot. Like, what did you buy with your first NFL check?
As a fly on the wall I was blown away by the kids questions. Over 20 questions were asked and both Big Flo and Sir Evan answered them authentically. As a result I was able to gleen inside their lives thanks to a captive audience. It was amazing to learn WHY this Boys & Girls Club was chosen to beign with. Both DJ Kai and his brother were product’s of this community establishment.

Valuable Life Lessons
Learning that “The Hotel” was a finance major in college made snense when he shared he bought “NOTHING” with his first check and just deposited it into his account. He drove the same car for 6 years while in the NFL. This yelled respnosbility with money to the audience. Evan’s story was a differnet. Both taught these kids valuable life lessons.
Sir Evan went undfrafted. He shared how bad it felt watching his name not getting called during the draft. Even after signing as a free agent his whole family thought he struck it rich. He shared how went shopping with other Cowboys players and had to choose from the clearance rack. This spoke to resiliency and how to handle adveristy while still chasing after your dreams. Oh, and being financially responsible.

It was their authenticity both on and off the stage with these kids for me. They will never forget this day. To be a fly on the wall and watch it first hand to bring it back and share here with you is so very special. In such a small window we learned so much. Thanks to a smart group of kids in the audience.
One Star One Family’s impact was felt with the Boys & Girls Clubs Kern County. Not only did they provide a safe space for Cowboys fans to network this weekend, they’re ensuring that children can see a product of their own environment like DJ KAI can make a signficant difference in Bakersfield, CA.

Conclusion
Finally, getting a couple valubale life lessons in finace was not on my “Bingo Card” in Bakersfield this weekend. It was just the message these kids needed to hear. Life happens to us all, but how you react to it more importantly when it does can make the biggest difference. That was the case for both of these former Dallas Cowboys players.
